Noureddine Chater

Noureddine Chater is a Marrakesh based artist greatly involved in protecting the environment. His art roots deep into the Arabic Calligraphy’s tradition which he exceeds by asserting his work as a highlight of the interractions between textual and figural, idea and form. Alphabet, word and sentence constitute the first material of the artist, who experiments with the graphic sense of language plasticity. His work is regularly exhibited in France, Germany, Senegal and Morocco to name a few.

As vice president of the “Centre méditerranéen de l’environnement” in Marrakech (CMEM), an NGO created in 1989, he is engaged in the diffusion of eco-gestures, inclusive development and greater ecological awareness in the Mediterranean, from schools to remote places in the Atlas mountains. For him, the non-profit field is “the one which allows people to fully express their creativity and citizenship”.

L’oeuvre de Noureddine Chater est ancrée dans la tradition de la Calligraphie Arabe qu’il dépasse en affirmant son travail comme une mise en lumière de l’interaction entre le textuel et le figural, l’idée et la forme. Alphabet, mot et phrase constituent le premier matériau de l’artiste qui expérimente la plasticité du langage au sens graphique. Il est régulièrement exposé en France, Allemagne, Maroc, Sénégal.

En tant que vice-président du Centre Méditerranéen de l’Environnement de Marrakech (CMEM), une ONG créée en 1989, engagée dans des actions de sensibilisation et d’éducation à l’environnement et au développement durable en Méditerranée, il agit aussi bien dans les écoles qu’auprès des habitants de régions isolées. Pour lui, l’associatif est “le seul secteur où l’individu exploite au maximum sa créativité au sens large du terme.”
